"#ArtificialIntelligence is increasingly hijacked by a bunch of yahoos and Elon Musk types who think robots are going to kill us. [AI is] too hot as a term. It has a constant history [...] of over-promising and substantially under-delivering."

The Smart, the Stupid, and the Catastrophically Scary

A long conversation with an anonymous veteran data scientist on AI, deep learning, FinTech, and the future.

Like, given the choice between a hypothetical paperclip maximizer destroying the galaxy, versus a delusional autocrat burning civilization to the ground while his supporters cheer him on and his opponents fight amongst themselves, I’m just about ready to take my chances with the AI. Sure, superintelligence is scary, but stupidity has already been given its chance and been found wanting.

AI Software Learns to Make AI Software

Google and others think software that learns to learn could take over some work done by AI experts.

Progress in artificial intelligence causes some people to worry that software will take jobs such as driving trucks away from humans. Now leading researchers are finding that they can make software that can learn to do one of the trickiest parts of their own jobs—the task of designing machine-learning software.

In one experiment, researchers at the Google Brain artificial intelligence research group had software design a machine-learning system to take a test used to benchmark software that processes language. What it came up with surpassed previously published results from software designed by humans.

In recent months several other groups have also reported progress on getting learning software to make learning software. They include researchers at the nonprofit research institute OpenAI (which was cofounded by Elon Musk), MIT, the University of California, Berkeley, and Google’s other artificial intelligence research group, DeepMind.

If self-starting AI techniques become practical, they could increase the pace at which machine-learning software is implemented across the economy. Companies must currently pay a premium for machine-learning experts, who are in short supply.

Bill Gates Says Robots Should Be Taxed Like Workers

In a new interview with Quartz, Microsoft founder Bill Gates makes a rather stunning argument—that robots who replace human workers should incur taxes equivalent to that worker’s income taxes.
“Right now, the human worker who does, say, $50,000 worth of work in a factory, that income is taxed . . . If a robot comes in to do the same thing, you’d think that we’d tax the robot at a similar level.”

Kickstarter >> Mycroft: An Open Source Artificial Intelligence For Everyone by Joshua Montgomery

#Mycroft now has a #RaspberryPi image that is ready to run. Developers, makers, hackers and enthusiasts can download the image to their Raspberry Pi and create their own Mycroft enabled projects.

We have created the Picroft image so the community has access to a quick, easy to install #ArtificialIntelligence ( #AI ). Our thinking is that having ready access to an out-of-the-box AI will inspire some crazy cool applications. We’re hoping our community proves us right.

This image is specifically designed to run without any configuration on your own Raspberry Pi 2 or 3. Just plug-in a speaker and a low-cost USB microphone, and you have everything you need to start working on your own voice agent.

You can download a pre-built Picroft 0.8 image that is ready to be burned onto a microSD card for your Raspberry Pi or you can access the components of the project which are hosted on Github in the Picroft repository.

I wonder how/when/if this can be integrated with the #HomeAssistant #HomeAutomation platform. Pretty exciting!
