A master of postwar abstraction, Zhao Wuji (1920–2013) created a unique pictorial language shaped by diverse influences. Throughout his long career, Zao’s experimentations in oil on canvas, ink on paper, lithography, engraving, and watercolour, allowed each image to evolve from the next, without imposing boundaries. As an artist, he came to inhabit his given name, Wou-Ki, or 無極 “no limits.”

FRED KOREMATSU

Fred Toyosaburo Korematsu (January 30, 1919 – March 30, 2005) was an American civil rights activist who objected to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Shortly after the Imperial Japanese Navy launched its attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, which authorized that individuals of Japanese ancestry living on the West Coast were to be removed from their homes and forced to live in internment camps, but Korematsu instead challenged the orders and became a fugitive. ---> read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Korematsu

75 Years Later, Americans Still Bear Scars Of Internment Order

February 19, 2017

It has been three-quarters of a century since President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. The order, issued just over two months after Japan's surprise attack at Pearl Harbor, gave the U.S. military the ability to designate areas "from which any or all persons may be excluded."

There was no mention of any particular ethnic or racial group anywhere in the order. Nevertheless, the implications were quickly quite clear: Not even a week passed before people of Japanese descent were being ordered to leave their homes in California. Soon, the forced relocation applied to the whole state, as well as much of the rest of the West Coast.

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

February 19, 2017 marks the 75th Anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which led to the incarceration of more than 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry.

Nearly two-thirds of the Japanese Americans who were sent away to live in incarceration camps during World War II were US Citizens. US officials used words like “internment” and “assembly center” to talk about how the government treated Japanese Americans.

President Frankin D. Roosevelt, who signed the executive order that resulted in the removal, himself called them “concentration camps.”

A page in American history that must NEVER be repeated.

Landgate

Rye ~

Rye is a small town in the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex, within the historic County of Sussex, England, which stands approximately two miles from the open sea and is at the confluence of three rivers: the Rother, the Tillingham and the Brede. In medieval times, however, as an important member of the Cinque Ports confederation, it was at the head of an embayment of the English Channel and almost entirely surrounded by the sea.

This ancient monument was built in 1329 when Edward III made grants for fortifying the town, and of the four gateways built this is the only existing one. It has a chamber over the arch and two towers. There were gates, a portcullis and a drawbridge.
