A Sunny Holiday Road-Trip, Day 10: Homesick

My American company forces me to take a holiday week between Christmas Day and New Year Day, and this year it's the occasion to drive from Key West to New Orleans in a Ford Mustang Convertible with my girlfriend.

Day 10: New Orleans, LA

After three days of bone-chilling wet gloomy weather, the mood is low. We already have canvassed the streets of the French Quarter over the last couple of days and we don’t seem to be able to enjoy any of New Orleans, LA’s charms today.

We tried to visit a couple other neighborhoods but the evergrey cold weather makes everything look dreadful and any stroll an ordeal. We finally realized that we’d rather be freezing at home in Brooklyn, NY than visiting a distant city, and we even went to see Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi to kill time indoors while waiting for our flight home scheduled tomorrow evening.

Initially planned to maximize our time in the final destination of our road-trip, the late flight now feels like a cruel torment under the depressing circumstances. We sorely miss the s... show more

A Sunny Holiday Road-Trip, Day 8: Changing steed

Day 8: Pensacola, FL to New Orleans, LA

We have been welcomed by the vintage camper’s owners like family, including a somewhat tense but cordial political discussion from either sides of the current American government. Even with that, I would have stayed longer in the cute history-filled camper with its friendly and chatty owners. Alas, we had to take the Mustang on the last leg of her trip.

Of course, she was outrageously unsuited for a road-trip on the highway and had way more in herself than we ever asked of her. We had nice strolls in sunny Florida streets with her, but her quick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission and 310 hp EcoBoost engine were used more to maximize fuel economy (29 mpg – 8.1 l/100km – average recorded over 7 days of mixed use) than to take advantage of her intriguing “Drag Strip” mo... show more

A Sunny Holiday Road-Trip, Day 7: Christmas on the beach

Day 7: Panama City, FL to Pensacola, FL

Merry Christmas everybody! We woke up in the boat after a rather mediocre but very comfy rest. After a lazy morning and a mini-shower in the boat’s micro-bathroom, we came out on the deck to set out for Saint Andrews State Park Beach.

And Brr! The temperature dropped to 12°C (53°F) since yesterday, so the convertible top stayed up today. Pants, jackets and sweaters were on as we strolled the immaculate white sand beach washed by transparent turquoise waters under a spotless blue sky. There we saw way more people than we expected on Christmas day, including whole families, exercising bros, senior couples...

Day 6: Tallahassee, FL to Panama City, FL

Today we visited the Tallahassee Automobile Museum which isn’t very accurately nicknamed. Besides the 150 cars ranging from 1894 to 2010 exposed on two floors of a vast warehouse, it also comprises a collection of die-cast miniature cars, knives, Steinway pianos, jukeboxes, boats, boat motors, fishing lures, sports memorabilia (baseball, football, golf), adding machines, brass cash registers, pedal cars, dolls, Native American artifacts, Batmobiles, motorcycles, brass fans, antique time pieces and spark plugs.

A Sunny Holiday Road-Trip, Day 5: Cedar Key, FL at 120mph

Day 5: Orlando, FL to Tallahassee, FL

Not a lot to talk about today as it was the longest segment of the road-trip. Orlando, FL to Tallahassee, FL was supposed to be a monotonous 4-hours, 250 miles (400 km) highway segment through rural Florida, but I decided to spice it up by checking out Cedar Key, FL, a peninsula on the West Coast of Florida. This added about 3 hours to our initial driving time estimate but we got the occasion to drive local roads and make a meaningful stop along the way.

After a solid breakfast comprising scrambled eggs, Italian sausage, bacon, chorizo and cheese taken at the Dixie Cream Cafe in Windermere, FL, we set out for Cedar Key, FL’s pier for the first 200 miles (320 km) leg of the day’s travel. As we drove away from urban Orlando metropolis... show more
Interesting to learn that NYC is also trying to tackle this problem. It's pretty much the same here in Berlin.

...and I hope you'll be luckier the coming nights with your accommodations.

A Sunny Holiday Road-Trip, Day 4: Henry Morrison Flagler

My American company forces me to take a holiday week between Christmas Day and New Year Day, and this year it's the occasion to drive from Key West to New Orleans in a Ford Mustang Convertible with my girlfriend.

Day 4: West Palm Beach, FL to Orlando, FL

Yesterday we wanted to check out the
Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in West Palm Beach, FL
but it was too late for that. Today we showed up first thing in the (late) morning in front of Whitehall, a sumptuous mansion the Florida-famous Henry Morrison Flagler built in West Palm Beach, FL as a wedding gift for his third wife in 1902 during the American Gilded Age.

I’m saying “Florida-famous” but it was by design, in reality Flagler was one of the wealthiest American industrial tycoons of his time, partnering with John D. Rockefeller to form the Standard Oil Company which would quickly move to acquire a quasi-monopoly over oil refining in the United States by 1880. But while Rockefeller created a widespread philanthropist founda... show more

Day 3: Miami, FL to West Palm Beach, FL

Today was beach day! We drove north from Miami, FL to the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park in West Palm Beach, FL. It is the only part of the local coast that hasn’t been lined up with private houses, hotels and resorts, probably because of the large estuary blocking access to the coast and that we crossed on foot on a wooden walkway. Birds live in the nearby mangroves and endangered sea turtles come to lay eggs on the park beach. A sign even warns about Crocodilians!

We enjoyed the slightly chilly waters for about an hour before we started to really feel the sun’s scorch and our stomachs growls. Even if it was only an entree and a shared dessert, we ate so much at our very late lunch that it would be our only meal of the day! It’s not a myth, food portion sizes really are out of contro... show more

Day 2: Cutler Bay, FL to Miami, FL

No alarm this morning as we both needed to sleep after a long day yesterday. We finally get up at 10:00 and set course for Miami Beach.

Sitting on an oblong island parallel to Florida’s mainland, Miami Beach is famous for its long public beach and its Art Deco building painted in various pastel tones. It’s been featured in many movies, TV shows and video games like Miami Vice, Burn Notice and Grand Theft Auto Vice City.

On Ocean Drive, the beachfront road lined with restaurants and hotels on the West side, and Lummus Park and the sea on its West side, our silver muscle car convertible feels almost discrete. We spot a neon green... show more

with my girlfriend
Ah, cool. :D I remember how you wrote about that you have no idea how to meet women as a single dad. Nice to learn that it worked anyway. ^ ^

Yes, I successfully used OkCupid, met her on a week I didn’t have my daughter and voilà!

A Sunny Holiday Road-Trip, Day 1: The Florida Keys

Day 1: Brooklyn, NY to Cutler Bay, FL

The early alarm at 05:00 in Brooklyn, NY was painful but the goal was worth it: to catch a plane from Liberty Airport in Newark, NJ to Key West, FL. It's the southernmost point of the continental United States and a small island at the end of an atoll sitting in shallow waters south of Florida.

The city itself is a gigantic tourist trap. You can rent bikes, scooters, trikes, jet-skis, hail pedicabs, visit numerous tropical-themed bars with live music or not, but everything looks and feels tacky, forced and expecting much bigge... show more

Enjoy your trip!

Enjoy the weather! Germany is currently at 5-7°C and is wet. No christmas weather at all.
2 people don't like this

White Christmas in Germany? I can hardly remember when, several years ago I guess ... :-( Mostly what @Michael Vogel says: 5-7°C and raining, not snowing.
Hyp❄️l🎄te Pet❄️van doesn't like this.

2010 IIRC and everyone was yelling about too much snow.
Now everyone is yelling about having no snow at all :-D
