A Sunny Holiday Road-Trip, Day 11: Extraction successful

My American company forces me to take a holiday week between Christmas Day and New Year Day, and this year it's the occasion to drive from Key West to New Orleans in a Ford Mustang Convertible with my girlfriend.

Day 11: New Orleans, LA to Brooklyn, NY

This morning, when I was checking us out for our late flight, United Airlines offered us to change flight for $150 total, which was way less than when I explicitly tried to change our flight yesterday. Jumping on the occasion, I changed our tickets for a flight 6 hours earlier, which meant we had no time to dwell on our low mood.

We had stayed for three nights in a single story wooden cottage in Treme, the oldest African-American neighborhood in New Orleans, LA. With a total of six bedrooms, out of which 5 were rented through Airbnb, it was a vast building with high ceiling, and several common rooms. The exterior was painted with bright colors as it is the tradition in the neighborhood. When we left the house with our luggage on our way to the airport, we discovered that the cloud cover had completely cleared... show more

I used to own one. It was a really fun car. No fun in the snow. ⛄️ ❄️

Ha ha, I believe you, I assume you now drive a pickup truck of some sort?

Nah, I’ve never owned a pickup. I drive a Subaru.

Oh, that's good on the snow too. I said I assumed because it was the most frequent vehicle type we saw in Florida.

A Sunny Holiday Road-Trip, Day 10: Homesick

My American company forces me to take a holiday week between Christmas Day and New Year Day, and this year it's the occasion to drive from Key West to New Orleans in a Ford Mustang Convertible with my girlfriend.

Day 10: New Orleans, LA

After three days of bone-chilling wet gloomy weather, the mood is low. We already have canvassed the streets of the French Quarter over the last couple of days and we don’t seem to be able to enjoy any of New Orleans, LA’s charms today.

We tried to visit a couple other neighborhoods but the evergrey cold weather makes everything look dreadful and any stroll an ordeal. We finally realized that we’d rather be freezing at home in Brooklyn, NY than visiting a distant city, and we even went to see Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi to kill time indoors while waiting for our flight home scheduled tomorrow evening.

Initially planned to maximize our time in the final destination of our road-trip, the late flight now feels like a cruel torment under the depressing circumstances. We sorely miss the sunny wea... show more

A Not So Sunny Holiday Road-Trip, Day 9: Nap day

My American company forces me to take a holiday week between Christmas Day and New Year Day, and this year it's the occasion to drive from Key West to New Orleans in a Ford Mustang Convertible with my girlfriend.

Day 9: New Orleans, LA

Even with the best intentions, things don’t always go as planned. After 8 days eating hundreds of miles of pavement, tiredness finally caught up with and smacked us on the back of the head. The two times we left our room today were to eat in the famous French Quarter of New Orleans, LA.

This morning we were looking for beignet, the local fried pastry specialty New Orleans is famous for. Unfortunately we weren’t the only ones as popular food venues had lines outside of them. The wet and cold weather made us find refuge in a sports bar serving good beignet fries. After walking around Washington Artillery Park and Woldenberg Park both under renovation, we heard a loud pipe organ melody, and sure enough, someone was playing a whistle organ installed on the roof of a large steamer ship moored on the Mississippi River.... show more
